The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a comprehensive mathematics curriculum, including general mathematical courses for the development of quantitative and logical reasoning, and advanced mathematics courses for STEM majors.
The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Actuarial Science and Mathematics. The Mathematics major includes the following concentrations: Advanced Mathematics, General Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Professional Mathematics, and Statistics and Data Analysis. Minors are offered in Actuarial Science; Mathematics; Mathematics for Managerial, Social, and Life Sciences; and Statistics.
Mathematics and Actuarial Science majors develop unparalleled skills in problem solving, logical reasoning, critical thinking, and quantitative analysis. This skill set is highly valued in the US workforce. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (2024), the rate of job growth in mathematical occupations is much faster than average, and the median salary for a mathematical occupation is more than twice that of all occupations.
Our programs support a wide range of careers paths with employment opportunities in government, academic, non-profit, and corporate sectors. Sample occupations include actuary, mathematician, teacher, data analyst, business manager, lawyer, physician, scientist, and engineer.
Honors College
MATH 1010 , MATH 1710 , MATH 1910 , MATH 1920 , and MATH 4600 are offered upon request by the Honors College.
Graduate Study
The department offers a Master of Science in Mathematics and a graduate minor. The department also participates in several interdisciplinary graduate programs including the Ph.D. in Computational and Data Science, the M.S. in Data Science, and the M.S. in Professional Science.
